Why are several sessions needed for effective laser hair removal?
Several sessions are needed for effective laser hair removal because the laser only destroys hairs in the active growth phase, and the hairs in a given area are never all in that phase at the same time. By treating the area at regular intervals, each new wave of growing hairs is reached in turn. At the Centre Laser Valbonne, a treatment course typically involves 6 to 8 sessions. The number depends on the area treated, the phototype and any hormonal disorder.
Why does the laser only work on growing hairs?
Each follicle follows its own cycle in three phases: growth (anagen phase), a short transition (catagen phase), then rest (telogen phase), at the end of which the hair falls out before a new cycle begins. The light emitted by the laser is absorbed by melanin, the pigment in the hair, which turns the light energy into heat that destroys the cells responsible for regrowth. This only works during the growth phase, when the hair is still connected to the base of the follicle. A resting follicle escapes the treatment: it will be reached at a later session, once it in turn enters the growth phase.
Why space sessions 6 to 8 weeks apart?
Between two sessions, a new wave of follicles needs time to enter the growth phase. At the Centre Laser Valbonne, the first two sessions are about six weeks apart, then the following ones about eight weeks apart. Too short an interval would treat an area where few new hairs have started to grow. Conversely, too long an interval — beyond about 12 weeks — loses part of the benefit: the hairs that were growing will have entered the resting phase, and you would have to wait several months, the length of a new cycle, to destroy them. That is why sessions are spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart, never more than 12 weeks.
Is the number of sessions the same for every area of the body?
No. The lower legs and bikini line generally need fewer sessions than other areas. The phototype matters too: results come faster on dark, thick hair. Finally, hormone-related hair growth, for example on the face in women, responds more slowly and usually requires regular maintenance sessions. The number of sessions is therefore adjusted over the course of treatment, according to how you respond.
What happens if a session is missed or the spacing is not respected?
Follicles destroyed at previous sessions stay destroyed, and there is no need to start the course again. However, if more than 12 weeks pass between two sessions, some of the hairs that could have been treated will have entered the resting phase: the treatment will be less effective and take longer. If you need to cancel a session, rebook it quickly. The team can be reached through Doctolib messaging.
Frequently asked questions
Can good results be achieved in fewer than 6 sessions? Usually not: 6 to 8 sessions are generally needed to reach several successive waves of growing hairs. But on some easy-to-treat areas, such as the lower legs, and in optimal conditions (very fair skin and dark hair), a satisfactory result is possible in four sessions. The number of sessions also depends on the initial hair density.
Are maintenance sessions needed after the treatment course? It depends on each person, and the rhythm of maintenance sessions is personalised. For areas that respond very well to the laser, such as the bikini line and lower legs, you can be hair-free for many years — even decades for the lower legs. In other cases, regular maintenance is essential, for example for facial hirsutism linked to polycystic ovary syndrome. The laser remains the most suitable hair removal method, but the result is not permanent as long as the hormonal cause persists.
Is the treatment course the same for men and women? The principles are the same, but men often need more sessions: generally 8 to 10, and about 6 when hair on the back or chest is sparse. Their hair is denser and more hormone-dependent, particularly on the face, chest and back, and the beard most often requires maintenance sessions. Each case is assessed during the consultation with Dr VERA.
