How should you prepare your skin before a laser hair removal session?

Preparing your skin properly before a laser hair removal session makes the treatment more effective and reduces the risk of side effects. The rules are simple: shave the area 48 hours before the session, avoid the sun for two weeks beforehand, do not use wax, tweezers or an epilator in the four to six weeks before, and apply no cosmetic product (cream, perfume, deodorant) to the area on the day of your appointment. These instructions are explained during the free preliminary consultation with Dr Milène VERA. Following them is what makes each session safe and effective throughout the treatment course.

Should I shave before a laser hair removal session?

Yes, it is essential. The laser targets the melanin in the hair, right down to the bulb beneath the skin. A long hair left on the surface would absorb part of the energy: it would heat up against the skin, with a risk of a superficial burn, and less energy would reach the bulb. Shave the area 48 hours before the session. The only exception: for women, no razor or trimmer should be used on the face. Facial hairs are cut one by one with scissors before the session. If you forget to shave another area, the team at the Centre Laser Valbonne can shave it for you at the clinic.

Why avoid the sun before laser hair removal?

Tanned skin contains more melanin: it absorbs part of the laser energy intended for the hair, with a risk of burns and of dark or light patches. Avoid any exposure to the sun or to artificial UV (tanning beds) on the areas to be treated for the two weeks before each session, and avoid self-tanning products too. Beta-carotene food supplements are also contraindicated throughout the treatment course. If your skin has been exposed, let the centre know before your appointment: if the area has been exposed in the previous two weeks, the session cannot go ahead.

Can I wax before a laser session?

No. Wax, tweezers, thread and epilators pull out the hair with its bulb, which is precisely what the laser targets: with no hair in the follicle, the laser has nothing to destroy. You need to wait for regrowth, usually four to six weeks depending on the area. Throughout the treatment course, use only a razor or trimmer — except on the face for women, where hairs are cut one by one with scissors, as often as needed.

How can ingrown hairs be prevented?

Ingrown hairs are common, especially after years of shaving or waxing. To prevent them, apply a cream containing urea or glycolic acid to the areas to be treated, starting one month before the treatment course and continuing throughout. These ingredients gently exfoliate and soften the skin, helping the hair to grow out normally. On the face, stop using it on the treated area for 2 days before and after each session.

Which products should be avoided on the day of the session?

On the day of the session, apply nothing to the area to be treated: no moisturiser, oil, perfume, deodorant or self-tanner. These products can interfere with the laser or irritate the skin, which must be clean and dry. If needed, the area can be cleaned at the clinic. Also mention any photosensitising medicine (some antibiotics such as tetracyclines, retinoids, some anti-inflammatories): some require the treatment to be adapted or postponed.

How should I care for my skin after the session?

After the session, redness and slight swelling around the hairs (perifollicular erythema and oedema) are normal and usually disappear within 48 hours. Apply a soothing cream, such as aloe vera or the one recommended by Dr VERA. Avoid intense exercise on the day itself, and hot baths, saunas and steam rooms for 48 hours. Avoid the sun and protect the area with SPF 50 sunscreen: this is also what allows the next session to go ahead.

Frequently asked questions

How long before the session should I shave the area? 48 hours before. This gives the skin time to recover from any razor irritation. If you shave earlier, the hair grows back above the surface: it heats up under the laser, which makes the session less comfortable and increases the risk of irritation. If you forget, the team can shave the area at the clinic.

Can I use a depilatory cream instead of a razor? It is not recommended. Depilatory cream does not affect the bulb, but it dissolves the hair through a chemical reaction that can irritate the skin, and irritated skin tolerates the laser less well. A razor remains the method of choice.

What if I have a skin infection or a wound on the area to be treated? If there is an active infection, an open wound, a herpes flare-up or any skin lesion on the area, the session must be postponed. Let the centre know before your appointment.
