At what age can a teenage girl start laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal can generally be started at around 16, once hair growth is well established. Earlier treatment remains possible on a case-by-case basis: at the Centre Laser Valbonne, we sometimes see younger teenage girls, when hair growth genuinely weighs on their lives. In all cases, a preliminary consultation with Dr Milène VERA, with a parent present, is essential: it assesses the situation, checks that there is no contraindication and makes sure the request really comes from the teenager herself.

Why wait until around 16?

Hair growth develops gradually during puberty. Treating too early means new hairs may appear after the treatment course, under the influence of hormones. By around 16, hair growth is generally established enough for the treatment to give long-lasting results. This is not an absolute rule, however: each situation is assessed individually.

When can treatment start before 16?

Marked hair growth can be hard to live with as a teenager. Treatment before 16 may be offered when it causes significant self-consciousness, or even a refusal to go to school. It can also be very helpful for teenage girls who do a sport such as dance or swimming: it frees them from having to manage their hair. In these situations, the benefit of treatment outweighs the risk of needing a few maintenance sessions later.

How does the consultation work for a teenage girl?

The free consultation takes place with at least one parent present. Dr VERA examines the skin and hair, checks for contraindications and takes time to talk with the teenager about her request and expectations. She explains what the treatment course involves: avoiding the sun, no longer using wax or an epilator, and keeping to the spacing between sessions. If excessive facial hair suggests a hormonal cause, she may refer her to a specialist for an opinion.

Which areas are most often treated?

In teenage girls, the areas most often treated are the underarms, legs, bikini line and upper lip. The areas and the order in which they are treated are chosen with the teenager and her parents at the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Can a teenage girl under 16 be treated? Yes, on a case-by-case basis. The consultation assesses the situation, particularly when hair growth is difficult to live with or interferes with a sport.

Does laser hair removal affect growth or hormonal development? No. The laser acts only on the hair follicle, through the heat produced in the hair. It has no effect on hormones, growth or development.

Does a parent need to be present? Yes, a parent must accompany the teenager to the consultation. The arrangements for parental consent are explained when you book.

Will the result be permanent in a teenage girl? Hair growth can still change until the end of puberty: new hairs may appear after the treatment course. A few maintenance sessions can then treat them.
