Is laser hair removal reimbursed by French national health insurance for hirsutism?
As a general rule, laser hair removal is not reimbursed by French national health insurance (Sécurité sociale). There are two exceptions: hirsutism linked to a hormonal disorder, certified by a specialist, and gender transition. In both cases, partial reimbursement is possible, capped at around €40 per session. The rest of the session price remains payable by you or by your top-up health insurance (mutuelle).
When does hirsutism qualify for reimbursement?
Hirsutism is excessive hair growth in women on areas that are usually male: face, neck, chest, abdomen or back. It may qualify for reimbursement when it is linked to a hormonal disorder, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or other hormonal diseases. This disorder must be certified by a specialist, an endocrinologist or gynaecologist. Significant hair growth with no proven hormonal cause is not covered.
What steps need to be taken?
The steps differ depending on the situation. For hirsutism, proof of the hormonal disorder, established by the specialist, must be sent to the Sécurité sociale. For gender transition, a request for prior approval (entente préalable) must be sent to your health insurance fund. As the arrangements can vary, we advise you to check with your CPAM before starting. As the Centre Laser Valbonne is a medical centre, if your situation falls into one of these two cases and the Sécurité sociale has given its approval, your carte Vitale can be used at the sessions.
What is not reimbursed?
All hair removal carried out for comfort or cosmetic reasons remains payable by the patient: legs, underarms, bikini line, back or chest in men, and any area treated outside those affected by hirsutism.
How does Dr VERA support you?
At the free preliminary consultation, Dr Milène VERA assesses your hair growth. If a hormonal cause is suspected and no tests have yet been done, she refers you to a specialist for an opinion. With hirsutism, the laser is the most suitable hair removal method, but the result is not permanent as long as the hormonal cause persists: regular maintenance sessions are generally needed.
