Does laser hair removal work on fair, blond or red hair?
Laser hair removal works poorly or not at all on very fair, blond, red or white hair. The laser works through melanin, the brown pigment in the hair, which absorbs its light and turns it into heat. These hairs contain too little of it: the heat produced is not enough to destroy the follicle. At the Centre Laser Valbonne, the free preliminary consultation with Dr Milène VERA gives you an honest assessment of whether your hair can respond to treatment.
Why does hair colour matter so much?
Hair can contain two types of melanin. Brown pigment (eumelanin), abundant in brown and black hair, absorbs the light of hair removal lasers very well. Red pigment (pheomelanin), which colours red hair, absorbs it very little. Blond hair contains little pigment, and white hair contains none at all. No laser, whatever it is, can destroy a follicle with no pigment to target.
Is all fair hair the same?
No, there is a gradation. Dark blond or light brown hair still contains enough brown pigment to respond partly to the laser, but only on fair skin. On even slightly olive skin, the contrast between hair colour and skin colour is insufficient, and the treatment will not work. Very light blond or strawberry blond hair responds little. Red hair, coloured almost entirely by red pigment, responds very poorly. White or grey hair does not respond at all. The colour seen with the naked eye is not always enough: that is why each case is assessed during the consultation.
Are there alternatives for fair hair?
Electrolysis, or electrical hair removal, destroys the follicle with an electric current: it works whatever the hair colour. It is, however, slower, as it treats hairs one by one, and is mainly suited to small areas. If your hair will not respond to the laser, we will tell you at the consultation, and Dr VERA can advise you on other options.
Frequently asked questions
Can red facial hair be treated with a laser? Generally not: its pigment absorbs very little laser light, and the treatment is of little or no benefit. The consultation assesses your case and, if needed, points you towards another method.
Can a few dark hairs among blond hairs be treated? Yes. Isolated dark hairs in an area of fair hair can be treated. The neighbouring fair hairs, however, will not be destroyed.
Should I be treated before my hair turns white? Yes, that is preferable. With age, hair loses its pigment, and a white hair no longer responds to the laser. Treating while the hair is still dark gives much better results.
