What are the contraindications to laser hair removal (medicines, pregnancy)?

The main contraindications to laser hair removal are pregnancy, certain medicines that make the skin sensitive to light, a recent tan and certain skin conditions. Most are temporary: treatment can start or resume once the situation is resolved. At the Centre Laser Valbonne, the free preliminary consultation with Dr Milène VERA systematically checks for them: current treatments, medical history and skin condition.

Is pregnancy a contraindication to laser hair removal?

Yes. As a precaution, laser hair removal is not carried out during pregnancy, whatever the trimester and whatever the area. During this period, the skin is also more prone to brown marks (hyperpigmentation), and hormonal changes alter hair growth, which would make sessions less effective. If a pregnancy occurs during the treatment course, sessions are simply paused: the results already achieved are kept, and the treatment course resumes after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Which medicines are incompatible with laser hair removal?

So-called photosensitising medicines make the skin more sensitive to light and increase the risk of burns or marks. These include some antibiotics (tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones), some anti-inflammatories, some blood pressure medicines or diuretics, and isotretinoin prescribed for acne. Beta-carotene supplements are also contraindicated throughout the treatment course. This list is not exhaustive: at the consultation, all your treatments are reviewed. Also report any new medicine between sessions, even if it seems unrelated to the skin.

Do skin and hair colour matter?

Yes. The laser targets the melanin in the hair: the stronger the contrast between dark hair and fair skin, the more effective and safe the treatment. Blond, red or white hair responds poorly, whatever the skin. On dark skin, the melanin in the skin absorbs part of the energy, with a risk of burns. At the Centre Laser Valbonne, we treat skin types up to phototype IV. Tanned skin is also a temporary contraindication: no session is possible if the area has been exposed to the sun in the previous two weeks.

Are skin conditions a contraindication?

An infection, a wound, or a flare-up of eczema or psoriasis on the area to be treated means the session must be postponed until it has healed. With frequent herpes flare-ups on the area, preventive antiviral treatment may be prescribed so that a session does not trigger a recurrence. Some conditions, such as lupus or vitiligo, require a thorough medical assessment before any decision. Moles and tattoos on the area are identified at the consultation and are not treated.

Should certain habits be changed before starting?

Yes. Throughout the treatment course, stop using wax, tweezers or an epilator: they pull out the hair the laser needs to reach. A razor and trimmer are still fine, except on the face for women, where hairs are cut with scissors. Avoid the sun, tanning beds and self-tanners on the treated areas, and protect them with SPF 50 sunscreen. These instructions are explained in detail at the consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have laser hair removal while breastfeeding? As a precaution, it is recommended to wait until you have finished breastfeeding before starting or resuming a treatment course. Dr VERA will advise you according to your situation.

Does isotretinoin (Roaccutane) prevent laser hair removal? Yes, during the treatment. A waiting period after stopping it is needed before starting sessions: Dr VERA determines it at the consultation.

Are beta-carotene supplements compatible with the laser? No. Beta-carotene food supplements, often taken to prepare the skin for the sun, are contraindicated throughout the treatment course.

Is diabetes a contraindication to laser hair removal? Well-controlled diabetes is not a contraindication, but it must be mentioned at the consultation, as it can slow skin healing.
